THE BIBLE – THE WORD OF GOD

(BIBLE=Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth)

One of the greatest adventures I have experienced is getting to know God through His written Word. God’s final word is revealed in the life and teaching of His Son our Lord Jesus the Christ. We are told in Paul’s letter to Timothy that ”You know how, when you were a small child, you were taught the holy Scriptures; and it is these that make you wise to accept God's salvation by trusting in Christ Jesus. The whole Bible was given to us by inspiration from God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives; it straightens us out and helps us do what is right.  It is God's way of making us well prepared at every point, fully equipped to do good to everyone.” 2 Tim 3:15-17 TLB. It is my prayer that this outline will help you come to know Jesus who is the Way, the Truth and the Life, the Author and Finisher of our faith. So pick up a Bible and print out this outline and begin the journey of a lifetime as you get to know Him through His written Word. “For those who believe, no proof is necessary; for those who doubt, no proof is possible” (Augustine).

  • The Old Testament is the account of a Nation.
  • The New Testament is the Account of a Man.
  • The Nation was founded and prepared by God to bring the Man (Jesus, the Messiah- Son of God and Son of Man) into the world.

God, Himself, became a Man to give mankind a concrete, definite, tangible idea of what kind of person to think of when we think of God. God is like Jesus, Jesus was God Incarnate, in human form.

His appearance on earth is the Central Event of all history (His Story). The Old Testament sets the stage for it and the New Testament describes it.

Jesus suffered, died on the cross, and rose again from the dead to restore our broken fellowship with God. The Bible is His Story. Our faith in Jesus and trust in His Cross and Resurrection, our acceptance or rejection of Him will determine where we will spend Eternity!

“Blessed are they who hear the Word of God and obey it.”  - Jesus  (Luke 11:28)

“All Scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching the truth, rebuking error, correcting

faults, and giving instruction for right living. So that the man who serves God may be fully qualified and equipped for every good work.”  Paul the Apostle  (2Tim.3:16,17)

“Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ”  - St. Jerome

  OLD TESTAMENT SUMMARY

§       The Historical Books of the Old Testament, Genesis – Esther, are the story of the Rise & Fall of the Hebrew Nation.

§       The Poetical Books of the Old Testament, Job – Song of Solomon, contain the literature of Israel’s Golden Age.

§       The Prophetic Books of the Old Testament, Isaiah -  Malachi, belong to the days of the Fall of the Hebrew Nation.

THE PROPHETS

The Prophets of the Bible may be classified into 2 groups: The Oral Prophets and the Literary Prophets.

The Literary Prophets are the ones whose books bear their names.

The leading Oral Prophets were:

  • Samuel, Organizer of the Kingdom
  • Nathan, Advisor to David
  • Ahijah, Advisor to Jeroboam
  • Elijah, Led in the fight against Baal-worship
  • Elisha, Successor to Elijah who also led the fight against Baal-worship.

In the Old Testament, God’s representatives consisted of Prophets, Priests and Kings.

Jesus fulfilled all three roles.

The Literary Prophets (800-400 B.C.)

4-Major: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, & Daniel

12-Minor: Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk,Zephaniah,Haggai,Zechariah, & Malachi.

The Historical Event that called forth the work of the Prophets was the apostasy of the Ten Tribes at the close of Solomon’s reign ( 1 Kings 12).

13 Prophets predicted the destruction of the Hebrew Nation

3 Prophets predicted the Restoration of Israel.

The Destruction of the Nation was accomplished in 2 periods:

·       The Northern Kingdom (Israel) fell 734-721 BC to Assyria. Preceding and during this period were: Joel, Jonah, Amos, Hosea, Isaiah, & Micah.

·       The Southern Kingdom (Judah) fell 606-586 BC to the Babylonians. Prophets during this period were Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, Obadiah, Nahum, Habakkuk, & Zephaniah.

The Restoration of the Kingdom occurred 536-444 BC. Prophets to this period were Haggai, Zechariah, & Malachi.

The Assignments:

To Israel: Amos, Hosea

To Nineveh (Capitol of Assyria): Jonah, Nahum

To Babylon: Daniel

To the Captives in Babylon: Ezekiel

To Edom: Obadiah

To Judah: Joel, Isaiah, Micah, Jeremiah, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi

MISSION & MESSAGE OF THE PROPHETS

1)     To try and save the Nation from its idolatry and wickedness.

2)    Failing in this, to announce the Nation will be destroyed.

3)    But not completely destroyed. A Remnant would be saved.

4)    Out of the Remnant will come a Person who will bring all nations to God.

5)    That PERSON will be a great Man who will one day arise in the family of David. The Prophets called Him “The Branch”. The family tree of David, once the most powerful family in the world, cut down, in the days of the Prophets, to rule a Kingdom that was disappearing, the family would have a comeback. Out of the family stock would come a Branch who is

King of Kings and Lord of Lords!
